How to choose the right size wheelchair

How to choose the right size wheelchair

Including seat width, depth, seat height, chair back height, and armrest size.

How to choose a wheelchair size
seat width

1) Measure the widest points on both sides of the hip joint

2) Add 2.5cm to each side, which is the distance between clothes of 1 size

3) If you use side pads, you need to add the thickness of the pads.

Seats that are too narrow will cause pressure and shear on the hips, increasing the risk of bedsores.

If the seat is too wide, it will cause the person to deviate from the center of the seat when sitting.

wheelchair loft

seat depth

1) Measure the distance from the back of the hip to the back of the knee

2) Subtract about 2.5" (6.35cm) (knee moving distance)

3) If a cushion is used, the width of the cushion needs to be added

4) A seat that is too shallow will cause increased pressure on the tailbone

5) A seat that is too deep will cause friction at the crooks of the user’s feet (the back of the knees) or hinder the user’s activities in the wheelchair.

wheelchair depth

seat height

1) Measure the overall height of the user

2) 165cm-188cm (49.5cm-52cm seat height)

3) Less than 165cm (seat height 42-44.5cm)

4) More than 188cm (seat height 55cm)

5) Can be adjusted using the seat cushion

6) A seat that is too short will affect leg support

7) Seats that are too high will affect blood circulation

seat height

Backrest height

1) Measure from the lowest point of your hips when sitting to the height of your shoulders

2) If a cushion is used, the thickness of the cushion needs to be added

3) For users with poor muscle tone subtract 3" (7.6cm) of height

4) For users with better muscle tone, subtract 4" (10cm) height

5) Too high and the user will lean forward

6) If it is too low, the support for users will be reduced.

seat back height wheelchair

Armrest height

1) Measure from the lowest point of the hip to the bend of the elbow when the user is sitting upright, then add 2.5cm

2) When using a seat cushion, you need to consider its height

3) 23cm is suitable for most users

4) If it is too high, it will put more pressure on the elbows and the shoulders will rise upwards.

5) If it is too low, it will not support the thighs and will increase the pressure on the ischial tuberosity and coccyx, causing the shoulders to sink.
