How to use a manual wheelchair (detailed illustrated guide)
How to Use a Manual Wheelchair (Detailed Guide with Illustrations):
General manual wheelchairs, excluding special function or sports wheelchairs,
can be divided into two categories:
- Large Wheel (Manual Wheelchair): Self-propelled wheelchairs with rear wheels 20 inches or larger and hand rims.
- Small Wheel (Transit): Small wheel wheelchairs assisted by a caregiver, with rear wheels under 18 inches, flexible and space-saving.
Hoho Medical Supplies has always been committed to popularizing medical supplies, especially knowledge related to wheelchairs, so that more people in need, such as elderly or sick individuals with mobility issues, can effectively obtain accurate and professional wheelchair information. Therefore, we have specially listed some precautions for using manual wheelchairs.

Large Wheel Wheelchair User Guide:
Basic Forward Movement:
Hold the hand rims, keeping your elbow joint at approximately 120 degrees, and push forward. When using on a sloped surface, exert more force on the side that is lower. Remember to keep the wheelchair moving forward and not to turn towards the lower side of the road.
Usage on Different Surfaces:
A. Curbs/Small Steps

- Stop the wheelchair before the curb.
- Ensure the front wheels touch the right-angle position of the step.
- Sit deep into the cushion, lean forward, and push the rear wheels with force.
B. Slopes

When going uphill, maintain a forward-leaning posture. If the slope is steep, use a zigzag method to reduce the steepness.
When going downhill, also adopt a forward-leaning posture.
Trenches/Depressions/Shoulders

Please cross trenches/shoulders at a right angle to prevent the front wheels from getting stuck. Alternatively, you can lift the front wheels to pass over depressed ground.
Drains

Please cross drain covers at a diagonal angle to prevent the wheels from falling into gaps and causing accidents.

Small Wheel Wheelchair User Guide:

Basic Forward Movement:
The caregiver should first grasp the wheelchair's push handles and push in the desired direction. Remember not to stop suddenly, as this may startle the occupant. When using on sloped terrain, the hand on the lower side needs to exert more force. Always remember not to turn towards the lower direction.
Usage on Different Surfaces:
A. Curbs/Small Steps

- Stop the wheelchair before the curb.
- Pull the handle while tilting the wheelchair backward to lift the front wheels.
- Ensure the rear wheels touch the step.
- Lift the rear wheels to cross the curb.
B. Curbs/Small Step Ramps

Go uphill with a forward-leaning posture; turn around to go downhill. Be careful not to go downhill facing forward to prevent the occupant from falling forward and getting injured.
C.Trenches/Depressions/Shoulders

Please cross trenches/shoulders at a right angle to prevent the front wheels from getting stuck. Alternatively, you can lift the front wheels to pass over.
D. Drains

Please cross drain covers at a diagonal angle to prevent the wheels from falling into gaps.
