The weight of an electric wheelchair can range from 10kg to 70kg or more, with the main factors affecting weight being the battery, motor, and frame structure.

1. Lithium Battery: Life cycle is 3 times longer than a typical lead-acid battery, with approximately 1000 charging cycles, lasting 3-5 years; it is also about one-third the weight of a lead-acid battery and features a BMS safety system to monitor current and voltage, preventing battery overheating.

2. Lead-Acid Battery (Wet Cell): Traditional battery, heavy, low efficiency, prone to overheating, and shorter lifespan. Cannot be taken on an airplane, but is relatively inexpensive.

Charging Precautions

- The electric wheelchair must be turned off during charging.

- If the electric wheelchair is not used for an extended period, please charge it regularly: if the battery remains uncharged for a long time, it will increase wear and tear, and may even damage the electric wheelchair.

- Avoid using a lead-acid battery charger to charge lithium batteries.

- Avoid using batteries or chargers of other models, brands, or incompatible specifications, as this may affect the performance and normal operation of the electric wheelchair, or even cause damage.

Charging Frequency (depending on usage habits), for example:

- Daily use | Charge daily

- Use 1-2 times a week | Charge once a week

- Use once a month or less often | Maintain a weekly charge (to prevent battery aging)

Under USDOT/IATA international air travel regulations, there are two main conditions for users to bring an electric wheelchair on an airplane (checked baggage):

1. The lithium battery power must be below 300W.

2. A UN38.3 report is required. Sometimes airline ground staff may not be fully familiar with the conditions for wheelchairs on airplanes. If you need to purchase an electric wheelchair that can be taken on a plane, it is best to look for a well-known brand or one with certifications, such as the following Zinger Chair/ Joy Rider / Quickie Q50R Carbon/ Carbon X , which have been certified by multiple airlines in Hong Kong.

Steps for bringing a wheelchair on a plane:

  1. Declare the wheelchair dimensions and battery wattage to the airline.
  2. If needed, you can request battery certification from us (for specific models only).
  3. Final confirmation before boarding.
  4. You can choose to check in the electric wheelchair or drive it to the gate, where the crew will take it to the cargo hold.

1. Better Li-ion Battery Chargers: These usually have an IC that senses if the battery is at a normal voltage. Due to the characteristics of Li-ion batteries, they charge quickly at the beginning, and then the charger reduces the voltage towards the end until the battery is slowly fully charged.

2. Lead-Acid Battery Chargers: These charge and discharge at a constant rate and can directly charge the battery.

Note: Due to the different characteristics of these two types of batteries, please use the original charger; and avoid using a Li-ion battery charger to charge a lead-acid battery, and vice versa.

For more details, see: Brushed Motors vs. Brushless Motors

1. Brushed Motors (commonly used in traditional power wheelchairs):

Pros: Inexpensive, quick start-up, high power

Cons: Heavy, high power consumption, not suitable for high-temperature operation, requires regular maintenance, performance degrades with use

2. Brushless Motors (new lightweight power wheelchairs):

Pros: Lightweight, durable, energy-efficient, has a computer (controller) that communicates with the motor to adjust speed and current as needed, preventing overheating.

Cons: Expensive, currently not many high-power brushless motors on the market

Controllers come in two types: 1) brushless motor control; 2) brushed motor controller.

The best motor controller is the British PG controller, which offers fast response, stable current and control, and a durable, robust casing.

Details: How to identify genuine British PG controllers (brushed motor version) - Electric Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs generally come with a right-hand control as the default setting.

If left-hand control is required, please inform us in advance so our technicians can install it.

If you need a caregiver to control the wheelchair from the rear, please also inform us in advance, and we can customize the controller to the rear.

Yes, most electric wheelchairs can be used in both electric and manual modes.

There are three basic frame types for electric wheelchairs:

1. Fixed, non-folding frame

Typically used for heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, as they require long battery life, resulting in larger, non-folding batteries.

2. Side-folding frame

The most common electric wheelchair frame in Hong Kong. Folds to become narrower for passing through gates.

3. Front-to-back folding frame

A newer design for electric wheelchairs, without the traditional "ox-ear" or "sheep-ear" type push handles, making them lighter and more aesthetically pleasing. The integrated design also reduces the likelihood of needing repairs. See Quickie Q50R Carbon.

  1. Avoid driving in heavy rain. If water reaches the mechanical parts, it could cause damage.
  2. When driving the electric wheelchair indoors, do not drive too fast to avoid accidents.
  3. When reversing, use a slow speed and be mindful of pedestrians nearby.
  4. Ensure that no objects are caught in the drive wheels, as this could cause injury or damage to the wheelchair.
  5. The user's posture should not be excessively tilted to prevent losing balance and tipping over.
  6. When going up and down stairs, assistance from others is required. Please try to use elevators whenever possible.
  7. Please observe traffic regulations when driving on public roads.
  8. Operating an electric wheelchair is like operating any other vehicle; avoid driving an electric wheelchair after consuming alcohol or medication to prevent accidents.
  9. When driving outdoors, please adjust your driving style according to the current weather and road conditions.
  10. When it is dark or visibility is poor, please wear conspicuous clothing or add reflective strips to your clothing to improve visibility.
  11. Avoid sources of fire during use. Do not smoke cigarettes on the wheelchair.
  12. Ensure that the maximum weight capacity is not exceeded (refer to the instruction manual for different models).
  13. Electric wheelchairs are susceptible to electromagnetic interference from electromagnetic energy emitted by sources such as radio stations, television stations, radio transmitters, two-way radio equipment, and mobile phones.
  14. Interference from these electromagnetic waves may cause the electric wheelchair's brakes to fail or become uncontrollable, leading to unintended movement or loss of directional control, and may also cause permanent damage to the electric wheelchair's control system.
  15. Users should practice operations such as moving forward, turning, overcoming obstacles, and braking with the help of caregivers until they can perform these operations independently, proficiently, and safely.

This is due to the quality of the lower controller. All electric wheelchairs designed with brushless motors require an amplifier and motor frequency processor (i.e., a lower controller) to drive the motors. The faster the lower controller processes, the smoother and more responsive the wheelchair will operate.

When purchasing a manual wheelchair, take 5 minutes to consider the following:

1. Appropriate Size

When choosing, pay attention to the width, depth, height of the seat, and the height of the backrest and armrests. It is recommended to try sitting in person at a physical store.

A well-fitting wheelchair provides high comfort, while an ill-fitting one may affect health or cause chronic body strain. Generally, mainstream wheelchairs in Hong Kong come with a standard seat width of 43cm (17”) or 46cm (18”), which suits the physique of most Hong Kong users (Asians); if a special size seat is required, custom-made options can be inquired about.

Details: 【Wheelchair Selection Tips】How to Choose Wheelchair Size

2. Purpose (Required Functions)

First, consider the user's condition and purpose of use. Refer to the following selection suggestions for different uses:

Daily Use: Recommend lightweight and comfortable manual wheelchairs for easy transport and to reduce the burden on caregivers.

3. Special Needs

Choose an appropriate wheelchair based on the user's physical condition, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, etc. Wheelchair functions include: reclinable, adjustable back tension backrest, orthopedic or detachable footrests, flip-up or removable armrests, hand-lever or foot-pedal braking systems, or foldable backrests for storage.

4. Large and Small Rear Wheels

Consider A) The user's mobility independence: with large wheels, the user can propel themselves, but not with small wheels. B) The user's living space: large wheels require a larger turning radius, while small wheels require less.

Suitable for individuals with large-wheel wheelchairs:

- Users whose upper limb strength is sufficient to propel the wheelchair themselves, who are heavier, and who will be propelling on more uneven surfaces.

Suitable for individuals with small-rear-wheel wheelchairs:

- Wheelchairs pushed by caregivers, needing to transport the wheelchair in and out of vehicles, needing to transfer to and from beds, and having narrow home passages.

** Debunking large vs. small wheel myths:

X Large wheels are more stable - Stability is not determined by the size of the rear wheels, but by the distance between the front and rear wheels and the contact area of the tires with the floor.

X Large wheels are sturdier - Sturdiness depends on the material and thickness of the tires.

X Large wheels are easier to push - Large wheels are not necessarily easier to push, but they require less effort. For the same distance, large wheels roll twice, while small wheels roll four times. How easy it is to push depends on the wheel bearings.

5. Price

The three main factors influencing price are ─ functionality, material (directly affecting weight), and brand quality

Brand Quality: Mainstream manual wheelchair brands in Hong Kong primarily come from Japan (e.g., Miki, Nissin, Ichigo Ichie) and Taiwan (Karma, Merits), with quality generally superior to mainland Chinese brands. Electric wheelchairs from Taiwan, the US, and Europe are usually superior to those from China.

6. Safety Certification and Durability

Wheelchair weight significantly impacts caregivers. Besides the load consideration when pushing, it also greatly affects the feasibility and safety of folding and transporting the wheelchair. Wheelchairs made from ultra-light materials can prevent caregivers from injury and strain during transport. Certifications include: ISO, FDA, CE, JIS T 9201, etc.

Generally, the standard seat widths for mainstream wheelchairs in Hong Kong are 40-43cm (16-17”) or 46cm (18”). These sizes are suitable for most Hong Kong users (Asians).

If the user is 165cm tall or weighs less than 165 lbs, a 16-17" wheelchair seat width is sufficient; if 165cm or taller, an 18" seat width is generally better. For special seat sizes, such as for obese individuals or children, custom orders can be inquired about.

Suitable for individuals using large-wheel wheelchairs:

- Users with sufficient upper limb strength to propel the wheelchair themselves, who are heavier, and whose travel surfaces are rough.

Suitable for individuals using small-wheel wheelchairs:

- Caregivers push the wheelchair, the wheelchair needs to be transported into and out of vehicles, there is a need to transfer to and from bed, and home passages are narrow.

** Dispelling common misconceptions about wheel sizes:

X Large wheels are more stable - Stability is not determined by the size of the rear wheels, but by the distance between the front and rear wheels, and the contact area of the tires with the ground.

X Large wheels are more durable - Durability is determined by the material and thickness of the tires.

X Large wheels are easier to push - Large wheels are not necessarily easier to push, just more effortless. For the same distance, large wheels complete it in two rotations, while small wheels require four. Ease of pushing depends on the wheel bearings.

  1. When getting on or off the wheelchair, please lock both left and right wheels first. If unlocked, the wheels may slide, posing a danger.
  2. When getting on or off the wheelchair, please do not step on the footrests to avoid the wheelchair tipping over and causing injury.
  3. Please park the wheelchair on a flat surface. If the wheelchair is parked on a slope, even if the wheels are locked, it may still move, posing a danger.
  4. Never make sudden turns or emergency stops while accelerating, to prevent the wheelchair from tipping over.
  5. Do not place near heat sources. Heat can cause the air inside the tires to expand, leading to explosions and loud noises.
  6. When folding or unfolding the wheelchair, please do not hold the edge of the seat to avoid pinching your hands.
  7. Pay attention to road conditions while moving to prevent the wheels from getting stuck in drains.
  8. Before driving, you must wear a seat belt.
  9. Avoid prolonged accumulation of moisture on wheelchair plastic parts, as this will reduce their durability.

  4. Do not use strong solvent cleaning liquids or stiff brushes to clean the wheelchair.
  5. Be careful not to soak the fabric.
  6. Steam cleaning is not suitable for these fabrics.
  7. Regularly check the connection terminals to prevent corrosion and damage that could affect the efficiency of electrical components.
  8. Before cleaning, ensure that the electrical parts are not connected to the battery to avoid accidental current.
  9. When cleaning, you can use a damp cloth to wipe the tires. After wiping, please immediately dry the tire surface to prevent moisture accumulation and reduce durability.

Common Maintenance Issues and Troubleshooting Methods

1. Suddenly unable to move?

- Was the wheelchair hit? If so, it is very likely that the motor tripped due to impact. Disconnect the battery cable, then reconnect it.

- If it happened on flat ground: It could be due to lack of motor oil, or aging battery or wiring. It needs to be brought back to the company for inspection.

- If it happened on a slope: It could be due to excessive current. Disconnect the battery cable, then reconnect it to resolve the issue. If it happens again, please call to schedule an appointment to bring it to the company for service.

2. Unable to charge?

- Has it not been charged for a long time? If so, it is very likely that the battery has entered safety mode due to prolonged non-use of the wheelchair. Please bring it back to the company for charging.

3. Short travel range?

- Has the wheelchair been used for a while? Or is it frequently used on slopes? If so, it is very likely due to normal wear and tear resulting in lack of motor oil or an aging battery. It needs to be brought back to the company for inspection.

** Please note: Before bringing the wheelchair back to the company for inspection, please fully charge it. We will then discharge it, and the entire process will take 3-4 hours.

1. Front wheel not spinning smoothly with a "clunking" sound?

- Lift the front wheel and rotate it to check if there's a sound. It's very likely a bearing issue, requiring a replacement at our company.

2. Wheelchair tire blowout?

- You can come to our company to replace it with a pneumatic tire, or you can purchase a solid tire (available only for certain models) to prevent future blowouts and for a permanent solution.

1. Feeling weak when going uphill?

The motor will wear out over time and with different routes, and requires maintenance at the company.

- Motor lubrication: $500, takes approximately 4-5 hours.

- Carbon brush replacement: Carbon brushes are $200 each, two per motor, totaling $800.

1. "Squeaking" sound from the stand?

- The screws at the bottom might be loose. You can tighten them yourself or bring the chair back to our company for a free tightening service.

2. Wear and tear between the seat and the stand?

- You can bring it back to the company to add shock-absorbing pads to reduce friction.

3. Carbon fiber stand broken?

- Generally, carbon fiber stands are very difficult to break unless they are hit. This is considered human damage. Please send us photos of the damaged area first so we can confirm the extent of the damage, and then we will decide whether the relevant stand can be replaced.

1. Too fast or too slow, or too sensitive?

- There are three main ways the controller controls speed: 1) the force of the user's thumbstick push—the harder the push, the faster it goes; 2) speed selection, usually with five gears; 3) computer program controlling the output of the gears.
