Electric wheelchairs can range in weight from 10kg to 70kg or more. The main factors affecting weight are the battery, motor, and frame structure.
1. Lithium Battery: Life span is 3 times that of a general lead-acid battery, with approximately 1000 charging cycles, lasting 3-5 years. Its weight is also only about one-third of a lead-acid battery. It is equipped with a BMS safety system to monitor current and voltage, preventing the battery from overheating.
2. Lead-Acid Battery: Traditional battery, heavy, low efficiency, prone to overheating, and shorter lifespan. Cannot be taken on an airplane but is relatively cheaper.
Charging Instructions
- The electric wheelchair must be turned off during the charging process.
- If the electric wheelchair is not used for a long time, please charge it regularly: if the battery remains uncharged for an extended period, it will lead to increased wear and tear, and even damage the electric wheelchair.
- Avoid using a lead-acid charger for lithium batteries.
- Avoid using batteries or chargers of other models, brands, or incompatible specifications, as this may affect the performance and normal operation of the electric wheelchair, or even cause damage.
Charging Frequency (depends on usage habits), for example:
- Daily use | Charge daily
- Use 1-2 times a week | Charge once a week
- Use once a month or less | Maintain charging once a week (to prevent battery aging)
Under USDOT/IATA international air regulations, there are two main conditions for passengers to bring electric wheelchairs on an airplane (checked baggage):
1. The power of a single lithium battery must be below 300Wh OR the power of two batteries must be below 160Wh.
2. Must have a UN38.3 report. Sometimes airline ground staff may not be familiar with the conditions for wheelchairs on airplanes. If you need to purchase an electric wheelchair that can be taken on an airplane, it's best to look for well-known brands or those with certifications, such as Zinger Chair/ Joy Rider / Quickie Q50R Carbon/ Carbon X , which have been certified by multiple airlines in Hong Kong.
Steps for taking it on an airplane:
- Declare the wheelchair dimensions and battery wattage to the airline.
- If necessary, you can request a battery certificate from us (limited to specific models).
- Final confirmation before boarding.
- You can choose to check the electric wheelchair or drive it to the boarding gate; the crew will then stow it in the cargo hold.

1. Better Lithium Battery Chargers: Usually have an IC that senses if the battery is at a normal voltage. Due to the characteristics of lithium batteries, they charge very quickly at the beginning, then the charger reduces the voltage until it's slowly full.
2. Lead-Acid Battery Chargers: Charge and discharge at a constant rate, directly charging the battery.
Note: Due to the different characteristics of the two types of batteries, please use the original charger; and avoid using a lithium battery charger for lead-acid batteries, and vice versa.
For details, please refer to: Brushed Motor vs. Brushless Motor
1. Brushed Motor (commonly used in traditional electric wheelchairs):
Pros: Cheaper, quick to start, powerful
Cons: Heavy, consumes more power, not suitable for high-temperature operation, requires regular maintenance, performance degrades with use
2. Brushless Motor (new lightweight electric wheelchairs):
Pros: Lightweight, durable, energy-efficient, has a computer (lower controller) that communicates with the motor, allowing it to change speed and current based on conditions, preventing overheating.
Cons: More expensive, currently not many high-power brushless motors on the market
There are two types of controllers: 1) Brushless motor control; 2) Brushed motor controller
The best motor controller is the British PG controller. It offers fast response, stable current and control, and features a durable and robust housing.
Details: How to Distinguish Genuine British PG Controllers (Brushed Motor Version) - Electric Wheelchair
Standard electric wheelchairs are preset for right-hand control from the factory.
If left-hand control is needed, please inform us in advance so our technicians can install it.
If a caregiver needs to control from the rear, please also inform us in advance, and we can custom-order the controller to the rear.
Yes, most electric wheelchairs can be used in both electric and manual modes.
Electric wheelchair frames generally come in three types:
1. Fixed, non-folding frame
Usually found on heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, they have larger batteries for longer endurance and are non-folding.
The most common electric wheelchair frame in Hong Kong, it folds to a narrower width for passing through gates.
A new design for electric wheelchairs, without the traditional "ox ear" or "sheep ear" push handles, making them lighter and more aesthetically pleasing. The integrated design also reduces the likelihood of needing repairs. See Quickie Q50R Carbon.
- Avoid driving in heavy rain. When water floods the components, it may cause damage to the machine.
- When driving an electric wheelchair indoors, do not exceed a safe speed to avoid accidents.
- When backing up, use a slow speed and be aware of pedestrians nearby.
- Ensure that no objects are caught in the drive wheels, as this could cause injury or damage to the wheelchair.
- The user's posture should not be excessively tilted to prevent loss of balance and tipping over.
- When going up and down stairs, assistance from others is required. Please try to use elevators whenever possible.
- Observe traffic regulations when driving on public roads.
- Similar to driving other vehicles, avoid operating an electric wheelchair after consuming alcohol or medication to prevent accidents.
- When driving outdoors, adjust your driving style according to the current weather and road conditions.
- When it's dark or the lighting is poor, wear conspicuous clothing, or add reflective strips to your clothing to improve visibility.
- Avoid sources of fire when using, and never smoke on the wheelchair.
- Ensure that the maximum weight capacity is not exceeded (refer to the manual for specific models).
- Electric wheelchairs are susceptible to electromagnetic interference from devices such as radio stations, television stations, radio transmitters, two-way radio equipment, and mobile phones.
- Such electromagnetic interference may cause the electric wheelchair's brakes to fail or lose control, leading it to move on its own or lose directional control, and may also cause permanent damage to the electric wheelchair's control system.
- Users should practice operations such as moving forward, turning, overcoming obstacles, and braking with the help of caregivers until they can perform these operations independently, proficiently, and safely.
This is due to the quality of the lower controller. All electric wheelchairs with brushless motor designs require an amplifier and a motor frequency processor (i.e., the lower controller) to drive the motor. The faster the processing speed of the lower controller, the smoother and more responsive the wheelchair operation will be.
Best responsiveness series: Joy Rider, Quickie Q50R Carbon, Carbon X
When choosing a manual wheelchair, take 5 minutes to consider the following points:
1. Appropriate Size
When selecting, pay attention to the seat width, depth, height, backrest, and armrest height. It is recommended to try sitting in person at a physical store.
A well-fitting wheelchair provides high comfort. An ill-fitting wheelchair may affect health or cause chronic physical strain. Generally, mainstream wheelchairs in Hong Kong use a seat width of 43cm (17”) or 46cm (18”) as standard, which suits most Hong Kong users (Asians); if special seat sizes are required, custom orders can be inquired about.
Details: 【Wheelchair Selection Tips】How to choose wheelchair size
2. Purpose (Required Functions)
First, consider the user's condition and intended use. Refer to the suggestions below for different uses:
Daily use: Lightweight and comfortable manual wheelchairs are recommended for easy transportation and to reduce the burden on caregivers.
3. Special Needs
Based on the user's physical condition, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, etc., select an appropriate wheelchair. Wheelchair features include: reclining, adjustable back tension backrest, orthopedic footrests or detachable footrests, flip-up or removable armrests, handle-style or foot-operated braking systems, or fold-down back for storage, etc.
4. Large and Small Rear Tires
Consider A) User's mobility independence: With large wheels, the user can propel themselves; with small wheels, they cannot. B) User's living space: Large wheels require a larger turning radius, while small wheels require a smaller one.
Suitable for users of large-wheel wheelchairs:
- Users with sufficient upper body strength to propel the wheelchair themselves, heavier users, and those navigating rougher terrain.
Suitable for users of small-rear-wheel wheelchairs:
- When the wheelchair is pushed by a caregiver, when the wheelchair needs to be lifted into and out of a vehicle, when transferring to and from bed, and when household passages are narrow.
** Debunking large/small wheel misconceptions:
X Large wheels are more stable - Stability is not determined by the size of the rear wheels, but by the distance between the front and rear wheels and the contact area of the tires with the ground.
X Large wheels are sturdier - Sturdiness is determined by the material and thickness of the tires.
X Large wheels are easier to push - Large wheels are not necessarily easier to push, just more effortless. For the same distance, large wheels roll twice, while small wheels roll four times. How easy it is to push depends on the wheel bearings.
5. Price
The three main factors affecting price are ─ functionality, material (directly impacts weight), and brand quality
Brand quality: Mainstream manual wheelchair brands in Hong Kong primarily come from Japan (e.g., Miki, Nissin, Ichigo Ichie) and Taiwan (Karma, Merits), whose quality is generally superior to mainland Chinese brands. Electric wheelchairs mainly come from Taiwan, the US, and Europe, and are usually of better quality than domestic ones.
6. Safety Certification and Durability
Wheelchair weight greatly affects caregivers. In addition to the burden when pushing, it also significantly impacts the feasibility and safety of folding and transporting the wheelchair. Wheelchairs made of ultralight materials can prevent caregivers from injury and strain during transport. Certifications include: ISO, FDA, CE, JIS T 9201, etc.
Generally, mainstream wheelchairs in Hong Kong have a standard seat width of 40-43cm (16-17”) or 46cm (18”), which suits the body types of most Hong Kong users (Asians).
If the user is 165cm tall or weighs under 165 pounds, a 16-17" wheelchair seat width is sufficient; if 165cm or taller, an 18" seat width is generally better. For special seat sizes, such as for obese individuals or children, custom orders can be inquired about.
- When getting in or out of the wheelchair, please lock both left and right wheels first; if not locked, the wheels may slide and cause danger.
- When getting in or out of the wheelchair, do not step on the footrests to avoid the wheelchair tipping over and causing injury.
- Please park the wheelchair on a flat surface. If the wheelchair is parked on a slope, it may still move even if the wheels are locked, posing a danger.
- Do not make sudden turns or emergency brakes while accelerating, to avoid tipping the wheelchair.
- Do not place near heat sources. Heat can cause the air inside the tires to expand, leading to explosions and loud noises.
- When opening or closing the wheelchair, do not grip the edge of the seat to avoid pinching your hand.
- Pay attention to road conditions when moving to avoid the wheels getting stuck in drains.
- Before starting, you must wear a seatbelt.
- Avoid prolonged accumulation of moisture on wheelchair plastic parts, as this will reduce durability.

- Check all screws on the wheelchair for looseness (e.g., footrests, axles, and seat).
- Listen for any unusual noises when pushing the wheelchair.
- Check that the wheelchair opens and closes smoothly, and that the locking mechanisms for the footrests and armrests are functioning correctly.
- Do not use strong solvents or hard brushes to clean the wheelchair.
- Be careful not to soak the fabric.
- Steam cleaning is not suitable for these fabrics.
- Regularly check the connection terminals to prevent corrosion and damage that may affect the efficiency of electrical components.
- Ensure electrical components are disconnected from the battery before cleaning to avoid accidental current flow.
- When cleaning, use a damp cloth to wipe the tires, and dry them immediately afterwards to prevent moisture buildup and reduce durability.
- The front axle often collects hair and dust from the ground; regularly use pliers to clean hair from the front axle to prevent it from affecting wheel operation.

Common Repair Problems and Solutions
1. Suddenly stopped working?
- Did you bump the wheelchair? If so, it's highly likely that the motor tripped due to the impact. Disconnect and then reconnect the battery cable to resolve this.
- If it happened on flat ground: it could be due to lack of motor oil, aging battery, or worn-out wiring, requiring inspection at the company.
- If it happened on an incline: it could be due to excessive current. Disconnect and then reconnect the battery cable to resolve this. If it happens again, please call to schedule an appointment for service at the company.
2. Not charging?
- Have you not charged it for a long time? If so, it's highly likely that the battery entered safety mode due to prolonged disuse. Please bring it back to the company for charging.
3. Short travel distance?
- Has the wheelchair been used for a while? Or do you frequently use the wheelchair on slopes? If so, it's highly likely that wear and tear has led to a lack of motor oil or an aging battery, requiring inspection at the company.
** Please note: Before bringing the wheelchair for inspection, please fully charge it. We will then discharge it, a process that takes 3-4 hours.
1. Front wheels not smooth and making "clicking" noise?
- You can lift the front wheel and rotate it to see if there is any noise. It is highly likely a bearing issue, requiring replacement at the company.
2. Wheelchair flat tire?
- You can come to the company to replace the pneumatic tire, or you can purchase solid tires (for certain models only) to avoid flat tires once and for all.
1. Feeling weak when going uphill?
Motors will wear out over time with use and travel routes, requiring maintenance at the company.
- Motor oil replenishment: $500, approximately 4-5 hours to complete.
- Carbon brush replacement: $200 per brush, two brushes per motor, total $800.
1. Frame making a "creaking" noise?
- The screws underneath may be loose; you can tighten them yourself or bring them back to the company for free tightening.
2. Abrasion between the seat and the frame?
- You can come back to the company to add shock-absorbing rubber to reduce friction.
3. Carbon fiber frame broken?
- Generally, a carbon fiber frame is very difficult to break unless it is hit. This is considered human damage. You can first take photos and send them to us to confirm the damaged area, and then we will decide whether the relevant frame can be replaced depending on the situation.
1. Too fast or too slow, too sensitive?
- The controller mainly has three ways to control speed: 1) The force with which the user pushes the joystick; the harder you push, the faster it goes; 2) Speed selection, usually with five gears; 3) Computer program controlling the output of the gears.
